Ultra-Mini PCNL

Dr. Janak D. Desai was trained in Urology in 1985-87 in Ahmedabad and then he went to Germany and USA for further training in Endourology. He started the first lithotripsy center of Gujarat (second in the country) and was amongst the first few in India to start PCNL as a routine surgical option for Kidney stones.

He developed the concept of Ultra-Mini PCNL in 2011 and called it by the acronym UMP. He has a patent for the instruments and they are developed by a German instrument maker. He has a chapter about Miniaturised PCNL in the Smith's Textbook of Endourology and also in North American clinics of Urology.

Janvi Urethrotome

Dr. Shivadeo Bapat trained in Urology from England after completing his post-graduation in General surgery from BJ Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital. He founded the Urology Department at Ratna Memorial Hospital in 1991.

He was first urologist in India to start PCNLs in 1986. Before these only open operations were being performed for kidney stones with much higher morbidity. He had patent in Janvi Urethotome for Operations for stricture Urethra. It is designed for performing urethrotomy, a procedure to incise and widen strictures in the urethra. He was the President of the Urological society of India in 1992-94. He received many accolades including the B.C Roy award.

Gaur's Balloon

The paucity of space for endoscopic surgical manipula- tion and an unsatisfactory pneumoretroperitoneum owing to abundant fat and tough areolar tissue in the posterior retroperitoneum have been the main reasons responsible for the poor results of retroperitoneoscopy. Dr Gaur described technique of retroperitoneoscopy using a balloon to expand and dissect the retroperitoneal space has solved most of these problems, in his publication in.Ann R Coll Surg Engl in 1994, that is widely practiced even today

Shah Penile Prosthesis

The prototype Shah s prosthesis was designed By Dr Rupin Shah in 2001. The implant was a pair of simple silicon rods; the patient was a 28-year-old school teacher who had failed to consummate his marriage due to severe erectile dysfunction, and had not benefited from intrapenile injections and venous ligation surgery. Since then, the Shah Indian penile prosthesis has evolved through many models to reach its present form which is currently the most commonly implanted and affordable penile prosthesis in India.

MICROPERC

Dr. Mahesh Desai acquired his M.B.B.S. degree in 1966 from B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad and his M.S. in General Surgery from Pune University. In 1973, he received a fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of London and Edinburgh, where he obtained specialized training in Urology. He returned to India to start his practice and establish the importance of modern treatment for various kidney diseases in Ahmedabad. In collaboration with Dr V. V. Desai, he established Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (MPUH) at Nadiad, a rural area in the state of Gujarat in India. Desai aimed to help men with adequate medical facilities concerning their urological diseases.

He performed more than 20000 PCNLs himself and described the 'Microperc' technique in 2011 in which percutaneous renal access and lithotripsy are performed in a single step using a 16 G micropuncture needle for safe and efficient in the management of small renal calculi in adult and pediatric population. It can also be used for renal calculi in ectopic kidneys and bladder calculi. The high stone clearance rate and lower complication rate associated with microperc make it a viable alternative to retrograde intrarenal surgery.
