Conception

The conception of a formal Urological body in India can be traced to 30 December 1960 during the Annual Conference of the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI), held at B. J. Medical College, Pune. At the time, the ASI was presided over by Dr. B. N. Sinha.

This meeting marked an important milestone in the recognition of Urology as an emerging specialty within the broader field of Surgery in India and laid the groundwork for the subsequent formation of an organized Urological section.

Inception

The Urological Society of India (USI) was established in December 1961 during the Annual Conference of the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) held in Baroda, where it was formed as the Urology Section of the ASI.

At its inception, a provisional Executive Committee was constituted under the chairmanship of the late Dr. G. M. Phadke, with Dr. B. N. Colabawalla serving as the Honorary Secretary-cum-Treasurer. This committee was entrusted with the responsibility of drafting the rules and regulations, enrolling members, and securing formal approval from the Governing Body of the ASI.

The Urology Section, which was subsequently renamed the Urological Society of India, began with a membership of 32 individuals. The majority were general surgeons, accompanied by a small number of formally trained Urologists, reflecting the early developmental phase of Urology as a distinct specialty in India.

The first Department of Urology

The first independent Department of Urology in India—functioning separately from the general surgical services—was established at Sir George’s Hospital, Bombay, during 1961–62 under the leadership of Dr. B. N. Colabawalla.

In the years that followed, several well-established centres of Urological excellence emerged across the country. Prominent among these were institutions in Madras, Vellore, Delhi, and Chandigarh, led respectively by Prof. A. Venugopal, Prof. H. S. Bhat, Prof. S. M. Singh, and Prof. B. C. Bapna.

The subsequent decades witnessed the steady growth of Urology as a distinct specialty, marked by the establishment of numerous dedicated departments throughout India.
